Let me tell you a story …
“Two monks were alone in their cell in the tower preparing to be burnt at the stake the following day …
The younger monk , as he was writing his last thoughts late into the night, burnt his hand on the candle that was lighting his work …
He winced in pain, then fell silent, a look of anguish on his face …
What is it? enquired the older monk …
Cried the younger … How will I bear my suffering tomorrow in the fire if I can’t bear the pain of a burned hand tonight!
The old monk looked at him tenderly … My son, he said, tonight you have grace enough for a burned hand … but tomorrow you will have grace for the consuming fire!”
We torture ourselves with a catastrophic future … we frighten ourselves with doubt and fear for what is out of our control. But today we cannot tap into the grace that will be available to us tomorrow. We are wired to deal with all things in the present, our brains can only be resourceful for present circumstances … we cannot project ourselves into an imagined future and know what is available to us. Once you really grasp this concept, you will realise that the only path is to trust that in each present moment you will have enough grace, that you will be OK no matter what is happening … that trust and faith will be your eternal rest …
